Random Crit is basically a relic from 2007 which should've been disabled by default as we already have enough weapons and utilities that lets us manage 2 types of crits on our own:
- The normal 3x multiplier ones such as Flare Gun (on hit against ignited enemy), Kritzkrieg, Bushwacka (Mini-crits turn into Crits), Ambassador, Diamondback, any shield except Tide Turner, any Sniper rifle cept Sydney Sleeper, Frontier Justice, Backstab, Backburner, Phlogistinator, Neon Annihilattor (If the enemy is covered in liquid or standing on the water)
- Mini Crits which basically lets you deal 35% more damage with not damage falloff and many weapons utilize that one which would've been too long to list.
Besides that it's been specifically mentioned by Valve themselves that random crits is rewarded by playing good and since the chance to randomly crit is tied to how much damage you dealt, this is basically a mechanic that ruins fun for new players or let alone give the good player an opportunity for his team to spawn camp. Besides that it also promotes making bad habits of engaging against a group all alone without even thinking about his own survival for the sake of having so much kills from a single crocket to show the whole server that "he" did it.
Stating that it's "casual" is basically a lame excuse as there's no fun in getting killed randomly if it also ruins your whole experience if lots of good players from the opposing team can pull that off more often than you, granted you could switch to next server but then what's the chance of you to deal with this situation again? Don't try to talk me out that it takes some skill since if you are already doing a good job without it, a random crit feels more like you are cheating each fight you participate in (Also it's very easy to raise a crit chance, such as using the afterburn, spamming rockets from a long distance or hell, blindly shoot grenades from one spot).
Another excuve i've kept hearing is that random crits prevents stalemates....it does not. The Ubercharge does a much better job with than as you have more control over it and it depends on when you should use it when it's fully charged.
You want random crits to stay? Fine, but as a compromise it should be tied to melee only as that way you need to be real close to the enemy to pull it off with actual risk of getting yourself killed more easily as a tradeoff.
There is no need to even use a plugin to remove or do something like that, all you need to do is to basically set these two commands:
tf_weapon_criticals 0 // Disables Random Crits entirely
tf_weapon_criticals_melee 2 // Melee weapons will always deal random crits, regardless if the command above here is set to On or Off
EDIT: Shounic did a
video where your weapon will glow if you are about to deal a random crit and made an experiment with it, but that method may lead to folks just straight up abusing it.
