Aside from it being only one instance of him meleeing you, it appears the REDs were supposed to be in the pit below for the LR. He may have been trying to get you into the game. As for his reply, he may have been just trying to be "funny".

I will give him a friendly reminder next time I see him that that isn't how you should try to get a RED to go into the designated location and to wait for a warning from the warden first.
