The Hale cap limitation or 44 hales only is a practice that doesn't hold up today (1 Viewer)

What's your personal take on the hale limit or [FF2] updates currently?

Seeing the title, you've already got the general idea about what I'm going to type; TL;DR: there's a lot of things that're pointlessly redundent and backwards about this practice in an era where ff2 servers that've continued to evolve have naturally increased the hale total, the download time isn't that bad nor would it be bad with more hales, the hale limit limits a good deal of creativity and potential for newer material, stagnation will eventually strangle the server albeit very slowly.

THIS IS A THREAD ABOUT COMPLAING ABOUT THE LIMITED AMOUNT OF HALES THAT THIS SERVER CAN HAVE.

44 hales or the maximum the server allows for is a backwards logical practice that I think limits the freedom of expression, I.E hales, from being suggested and as everyone knows this means removing hales or outright reworking them to fit a new agenda one would want for them, to give select detailings as to what the hell I'm trying to convey:
you're given these, following isn't necessary but ensures that it'll be fine, in my eyes when it comes to touching currently existing hales

  1. Keep within the character's design, this stands for their: sounds, abilities, model/textures and gameplay
  2. Try not to overly complicate the hale but attempt to at least breath in something new to make them stand out
  3. Make sure the new design you're going forth with makes sense for the character, staying in line
so what am I trying to portray, well I'm trying to portray that with the possibility of making a hale that's already existing in the roster more nuanced and individually distinct whilst at least understanding what the hale is and who tends to play them, comes the result of annoying the people who play them and creating confusion or difficulties for newer players coming in.

Let's take these three hales for example:

  • Gaben
  • Shadow thief (removed)
  • Captain punch
The differences between these hales will be apparent to anyone who's played regularly and quite often, you'll quickly understand where I'm coming with this but to try and structure it in sentences:
  • Gaben is incredibly straight forward, a super jump, a rage that stuns and lets you attack faster, plus a lifeloss that instantly kills people by looking at them, albeit with a reload ability that doesn't make sense whatsoever. easy to understand, very friendly to anyone playing or starting off in the game but ultimately generic as a result
  • Shadow thief when he was a selectable hale, he was a hale that had a 0 cd, no rage cost mobility ability that let him jump off walls, started off weak then became powerful with a few balance patches, shortly after got removed due to the nature of the hale: quick, intense skill floor that better players easily bypassed and understandably pissed off people on the receiving side. not hard to understand but requires a bit more input that was fun to play around with, unique but flawed
  • Captain punch is one of the few hales that could be said as the most straight forward hale in terms of ability bloat but just as it is ability bloat, that ends up being its flaw, 5 punches that can be selected by pressing numbers 1 through 5, with about 2 being used at most, a glorified super jump weighdown slam ability that hurts in a aoe, a teleport for some reason and a rage that's just a glorified noclip whilst being easily exploitable currently. newcomers get torn apart, good players depending on the circumstances can breeze through matches with him.
"and what is this supposed to mean?"
that it's hard to make hales that appeal to everyone and are easy to pick up whilst standing out without being awful to play against whilst being fun for the hale player to play as.

that's the first of the problems when it comes to making a hale, it's not easy because I've seen recent matters with the new hales that're multi ability ones and everyone just hits THE RAGE BUTTON then dies usually since these practices are quite out there, most people don't know that you can use your reload key or special key (mouse 3 button) to activate additional abilities despite being clearly displayed on the hud.

The first problem or to make it short version of this section is that:

  • making hales that're different usually ends up with problems for the average joe or problems balancing said hales due to factors that couldn't easily be touched on due to a lack of coders or quick updates to the live server
which is a minor issue, easily solved, but not currently due to conditions.

Now for the actual problem about all of this, that was just word vomit.

The reason why the hale limit or 44 hales is a crock of hot garbage is that:
  • people nowadays are willing to sit down for longer times to download way more contents than before, internet speeds are generally quicker
  • most "new players" never stick around for very long, they're the loudest and they barely leave much impact by the end of it all, meaning they're not a good source of blood flow for the server usually
  • veterans and regulars actively want more content, this isn't a strawmanning nor the putting of words into their mouths to boast my claims falsely, people would be happy to have more content any day
  • the file size excuse is the most bullshit excuse I've ever heard in my entire life, I've seen servers many years ago with double the file size of what panda ff2's is or was and were completely filled out with 24/24 players
  • MOST OF THE HIGH FILE SIZES COMES FROM BGMS/THEME SONGS AND TEXTURE FILES FROM CONCURRENTLY EXISTING HALES DUE TO NOT BEING COMPRESSED WELL, THIS IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE, YOU COULD MAKE THE FILE SIZE STUFF 2/3 OF WHAT IT IS, potentially.
New players are not coming over to freak fortress 2 frequently, if anything due to recent history it's saxton hale players coming over due to their gamemode kicking the bucket and no one wanting to play the aids meta of instant weighdown or the pyro cancer meta that they've got there, I don't play saxton hale, I've only ever played ff2 so I wouldn't know.

many of panda's players are people from years ago with the rare few exceptions of today becoming regulars on the off chance, they have no issues with downloading contents or just waiting a bit longer to play on freak fortress, having more content would mean more variety which would mean more players coming on for said content, which means more potential donators, not rocket science to understand this.

it's not 2012 - 2015 anymore, most people who play tf2 or FF2 nowadays are people who've been playing for a lot of years, the community here for the freak or saxton servers are mostly veterans to regulars, so this new player policy is bogus.

These are my two main complaints, it's hard to redesign existing hales and it's hard to get newer ones in because it's a fond attachment to the existing hales that've been here for a very long time, I do not want to remove most hales, if any if possible, a few exceptions here and there but I generally just want more contents, the complaints could be said as mine and mine alone but I digress, people who play on ff2 would love to have more, maybe it could be said it may on the very rare off chance "kills" newer player engagement but that's not going to happen in my eyes.

[FF2] The hale limit deserves to be more than 44 hale slots

what do you think?

overall it was atleast on my mind to not make it grow exponentially just always imagine a new player joins and needs to wait 5-10 minutes (if not longer) to download 3-400MB of content.

content is on the fastdl so the limiting factor is always the players inet speed - i dont have anything against it going beyond any set "limit" but it shouldnt end up at 80 bosses i guess cause scrolling through the selection menu of 20 pages isnt surely fun either.

80's too much, the maximum this server should at best have is 60 hales and that's with mind to file sizes being moderately sized, 55 if the hales end up being a bit more beefy but even the server that used to have mega tons that I know of and played, still going to this day funnily enough, has 72 hales at best which is a lot.

last thing I want is infinite content, that's unreasonable, as I've said already with 55 or 60 hale slots would be enough (given how beefy the content sizes may be) to give a bit more room for some of the cooler ideas or concepts that other content creators might want to suggest themselves, not speaking for myself, which would be greatly beneficial for the future of ff2's lifespan.

I understand frustrations towards how certain things are set to a limit or how it is operated.

But what you don't need to do it dismiss opposing views as garbage, mocking past decisions and interject personal insults. It makes any debate about this start off as toxic and discourages others from stating anything with an opposing view to yours.

If you are going to bring up topics such as these again, do consider that opposing reasons to yours should be met with respect as you should expect respect for your views.
