Can I suggest something? Because, well, this could be too much restrictive in my opinion. AND, you can't make comparison between voice and text chat, really... Text chat is completely less problematic than voice one.
If you really want, you can allow not only English in text chat, but only ALL Romance Languages + English.
You know, guys, most of us are European. And, more or less, Romance Languages can be understood. Reading them in text chat is different than reading a (for example) Russian sentence, you know. (nothing against Russians, for example, but it's fact of understanding at least some what people write in text chat).
Romance Languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese...+ English) could be the only allowed in text chat.
The fact of German language? Well, if you want add also this one.
It's not racism/ discrimination/ whatever you want to call him, but it's realism: our community is of European mould. I'm ag
against this limit.

Anyway, if I can say this, the problem is not really text chat, Inu: there are many and many other problems to think about. Making limits to text chat is very bad. The problem is SPAM itself, not using "strange" languages.
Discussing about languages is quite silly, really... The only problem is the Spam, as I said (which can be in all the languages you want, also English... MAINLY English).

And, at least in the whole experience I have of being Admin, NOBODY has cared of languages in text chat (maybe just 1/100 people complained about Russian/Arabic characters, but 100% sure about European languages, that nobody cared of them so much).
You are talking about an entirely different thing that the actual topic so I won't reply to this as I'd be just rewording the OP. Please read the entire thread again, I don't think you understand my point at all.

I absolutely disagree, but I would support a rule that players have to translate if they're asked by an admin. Even though this might cause problems with wrong translations and other people complaining about the wrong translation. But since it's sometimes hard for people (me included) to say what they want to say if they can't use their main language I'm against this change.

Using your logic I could ask an obvious hacker if he was aimbotting and if he says no, I just trust him and move on. I will never put blind faith in any player, that would put them in charge instead of me.

Still, there would be people telling you that he's hacking and in that case you could watch him (use google translate) and in case of a wrong translation I wouldn't gag/war but ban for 120 minutes.

And why should I go through this effort to appease 1% of the server's population? I still don't get the pro.

The pro is that people would continue to enjoy this community and not call the servers/admins racists.

I don't mind being labeled a racist by people who don't know what racism even means.

So basically you just really want to keep writing Italian to your friends? :]

Edit: Why did you rate my post dumb? You obviously just want to keep talking Italian, why else would you only wish for the Latin branch, and not the Germanic branch, which uses the English alphabet? English is even in the Germanic branch, along with many other european languages; more than the Latin one.

I don't really like Matt's idea so much because French and Hungarian are little more comprehensible to me than Russian or Chinese, apart from being able to recognise "merde".

Amen rofl.

I wholeheartedly agree with this suggestion. I've seen people who just stop talking in their language if you ask them nicely, but having it as a rule would be a nice buffer against those who start arguing with you. I've tried using google translate for some chat and it doesn't even translate properly, so I can't tell if they are insulting someone or just talking casually.

I sincerely doubt that any major change will happen in this voting. All of the "I don't care" camp would have to switch their vote to a no and then 10 more people would have to come by to vote no.

I will extend the rule. As of this evening, Panda is a fully English-only community. Thank the British Empire for making this possible.

I have but one message to those who opposed the cause...

Next up: only correct grammar is allowed.
I already have the OP in my head. Beautiful. "Correct grammar only, for a united Panda reich."

My vote/opinion probably does not matter but here i go. Talking a language in the voice chat that is not english can be real annoying for people who are trying to play and i completely understand why there would be a rule against people talking languages other than english in the voice chat but i do not understand why restrict the people to only be able to talk english in the chat.

See,the chat can be just simply ignored and its not that distracting as, lets say, a russian guy screaming in voice chat "KURWA,KURWA". Lots of people who do not speak english can also have fun in servers like dodgeball,high-tower ETC.

But here is where i also agree with this plan of the english only rule. See i would prefer if the english only rule would be added to servers that they actually need it. Servers like jailbreak for example really need this rule, since people must communicate with each other, and so speaking english is chat or voice chat should be a no brainer if someone wants to communicate or just talk to someone. But servers like dodgeball do not need the ''english only in chat rule'' since people would just want to talk with friends and it would not hurt anyone, since people do not really need to talk with each other. They just do it because they want to.

Also people cursing in the chat in another language does not matter to be honest. Yes saying bad words in the chat can be annoying but if it is in a language that no one understands that i personally think its fine, the admins do not have to translate every bit they say, plus if a person actually understands the bad word from that foreign language then he can just simply report that to the admin and THEN the admin can use translation and maybe punish the person cursing.

Because of all of these reasons my vote is split. I am neither voting yes and neither voting no. I would prefer if this rule would apply for some specific servers and not just all of them, since i think it would be worse for some servers. Well this is my opinion about this matter,i will vote nothing and i hope my opinion was any of help in making your judgement of voting either yes or no. Thank you for reading this and have a great day <3

Have you perhaps not noticed that this rule has already been implemented a month ago and posting on this thread is no longer meaningful? Make a new thread if you want any significant changes to be made.

Agreed, I'll close this for now. Should any admins wish to bring something up then they can re-open it :)
